The unresolved mystery of the "Lost Colony" of English settlers who vanished without a trace in the late 16th century is what makes the island of Roanoke, off the coast of North Carolina, most famous.

Around 120 English settlers travelled to the island in 1587 to form a colony under the command of Governor John White. White went back to England to get supplies, but when he came back three years later, the colony had been abandoned. White's daughter and granddaughter were among the colony's residents who vanished without a trace, and the only sign of their whereabouts was the word"Croatoan" etched into a post and the initials c into a tree were the sole indications of their fate.
A Native American tribe known by the name of Croatoan once inhabited the region of what are now known as North Carolina's Outer Banks.
What transpired to the Lost Colony is the subject of numerous theories. Others assume they may have assimilated with the native population, while some claim they were attacked and slaughtered by the nearby Native American tribes. Another hypothesis is that they relocated to another site on the mainland or sailed back to England.
Numerous myths and stories about the island of Roanoke have developed as a result of the disappearance of the Lost Colony. Some people think the colonists were cursed or that the ghosts of the colonists who died there still roam the island. Some people assert that aliens visited the colony or that the inhabitants discovered a secret treasure on the island.
The mystery of the Lost Colony of Roanoke Island has not been solved despite numerous voyages and inquiries.
